Virginia State Parks has 44 parks, and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park cover the mountain side of the state. The National Park Service says weather, construction, or emergencies can cause temporary closures on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the National Weather Service says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Virginia State Parks says 24 of its 44 parks take part in its host program, with camp hosts, park hosts, and retail hosts. It says hosts sign up for 30-day assignments during the camping season, which it describes as running from the first weekend in March to the first weekend in December with dates varying by park, and that assignments are generally limited to 60 days in any one park. Campsite fees are waived, no salary or stipend is provided, and hosts must provide their own RV or camping equipment. Each park's listing gives its hookups and maximum RV length, and those differ by park.

Virginia State Parks says approval is a process that starts with an application, followed by an interview with the camp host manager and background and reference checks, and that it generally takes three to five weeks.
