What the Data Shows

Employer groups in HitchPath's listings. By listing count the largest groups are National Park Service (502, 47%), Private RV Park category (private, KOA or resort employer type) (178, 17%), KOA Campgrounds (155, 14%). Groups are matched on employer or title text and overlap, so shares do not sum to 100%. This describes HitchPath's listings, not the whole market.

RV site marked as included in 16% of listings. 173 listings (16% of 1,070) are marked as including an RV site. Of those, 15 (9%) have an hourly or annual pay type and 157 (91%) have a volunteer pay type; 1 has neither classification.

States and DC with the most listings. Texas (83), District of Columbia (79), California (73), North Carolina (52), Virginia (52) have the most listings in this snapshot.

Volunteer and paid pay types. 790 listings (74%) have a volunteer pay type and 273 (26%) have an hourly or annual pay type. 870 listings (81%) are tagged Federal. Listings without pay information are not treated as unpaid.

Listings in all 50 US states. This snapshot has at least one active listing in all 50 US states, ranging from 83 listings in Texas downward.

Methodology

These figures count listings on HitchPath's own job board. They are not a survey of the workamping industry and do not estimate the whole market.

  • Included: workamping listings that are not excluded and have not passed their expiry date, plus employer-posted listings that are approved and not expired.
  • Total active listings: every included listing record. Duplicate-looking postings (same title, employer and location) are not merged.
  • Paid / volunteer: counted by the listing's pay type (hourly or annual = paid; volunteer = volunteer). Pay type is a classification, not a verified compensation arrangement. A listing with neither is counted in the total only; missing pay information is not treated as unpaid.
  • Tag conflicts: the "Paid Job" tag and pay type do not always agree (see the paid-versus-volunteer answer for this snapshot's counts). Counts here use pay type; tag-based counts would differ.
  • RV site included: the listing is flagged as including an RV site. Hookups, cost and site type are not measured.
  • Camp host: listings matching the job board's Camp Host filter (/jobs?tag=Camp+Host): the Camp Host tag on workamping listings, plus employer-posted listings titled "camp host" or "campground host". Other titles that merely contain "host" are not counted.
  • Private RV Park category: the job board's Private RV Park category (employer type private, KOA or resort; employer-posted listings are classed private). It counts HitchPath listings, not RV parks, and includes KOA listings.
  • Employer groups (National Park Service, Forest Service, KOA, state parks and so on) are matched on employer or title text, except the Private RV Park category above. Groups and categories overlap, so they do not sum to the total.
  • Stipend / allowance: the listing carries the Stipend / Allowance tag; amounts are not measured.
  • States and DC: the state stored on each listing. The District of Columbia is shown alongside the states but is not counted among the 50 US states, and the 50-state count only includes the 50 actual state codes. Geography follows the location stored on each listing and may reflect incomplete or incorrectly mapped source data.
  • Registered employer accounts: active employer accounts on HitchPath, which is not the number of employers with active listings.

Sources in this snapshot: Volunteer.gov feed (788), KOA campground listings (156), Manually curated listings (95), Employer-posted listings (22), USAJOBS (9).

Limitations

  • A listing's presence depends on what each source publishes and how HitchPath imports it; coverage is not complete for any source.
  • Classifications such as pay type, RV site and tags come from source data and HitchPath's import rules, and may be incomplete.
  • Geography follows the location stored on each listing and may reflect incomplete or incorrectly mapped source data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many workamping jobs are currently listed on HitchPath?

As of the October 26, 2026, 20:03 UTC snapshot, HitchPath's job board had 1,070 active, non-expired listings (paid, volunteer and unclassified compensation) in all 50 US states. This counts HitchPath's own listings only and is not a count of all workamping jobs in the market.

Which states have the most workamping jobs?

The top five locations by listing count in this snapshot (US states and the District of Columbia) are: Texas (83), District of Columbia (79), California (73), North Carolina (52), Virginia (52). Geography follows the location stored on each listing and may reflect incomplete or incorrectly mapped source data.

How many HitchPath jobs include an RV site?

173 listings (16% of 1,070) are marked as including an RV site. Of those, 15 (9%) have an hourly or annual pay type and 157 (91%) have a volunteer pay type; 1 has neither classification. A listing's RV-site flag does not describe hookups or cost.

Are HitchPath workamping jobs paid or volunteer?

273 listings have an hourly or annual pay type and 790 have a volunteer pay type. The remaining 7 have neither; they are not counted as unpaid. Pay type is a classification, not a verified compensation arrangement: 249 listings carry the "Paid Job" tag, 16 of those have a different pay type and 40 listings with an hourly or annual pay type lack the tag. Volunteer placements may describe a campsite, utilities or an allowance; see each listing for details.

Which employer groups have the most HitchPath listings?

By listing count, the largest employer groups are National Park Service (502, 47% of listings), Private RV Park category (private, KOA or resort employer type) (178, 17% of listings), KOA Campgrounds (155, 14% of listings). Groups are matched on employer or title text and can overlap, so they do not sum to the total.

How many workamping jobs include a stipend?

54 listings carry the Stipend / Allowance tag. The tag does not state an amount or schedule, and a listing can be both a volunteer placement and carry a stipend tag.

Do RV site included listings also have an hourly or annual pay type?

173 listings (16% of 1,070) are marked as including an RV site. Of those, 15 (9%) have an hourly or annual pay type and 157 (91%) have a volunteer pay type; 1 has neither classification.

Are federal workamping jobs paid or volunteer?

870 listings are tagged Federal. 82 of them have an hourly or annual pay type; the rest have a volunteer pay type or none. Counting the "Paid Job" tag instead would give a different number (see the paid-versus-volunteer answer above).

What are the top states for camp host jobs specifically?

Counting listings that match the job board's Camp Host filter, the states with the most are: Texas (19), Arkansas (16), California (12), North Carolina (12), Virginia (9).

How many private campground and KOA jobs are available?

178 listings fall in the job board's Private RV Park category (employer type private, KOA or resort; employer-posted listings are classed private). 155 of all listings have a KOA employer name; KOA listings are part of the Private RV Park category, so the two counts overlap. This is a count of HitchPath listings, not of private RV parks or of all private campground jobs.

Does HitchPath have workamping listings in every state?

In this snapshot, all 50 US states had at least one active HitchPath listing. Listing volume varies widely by state and changes as listings are added and expire.

Where does HitchPath workamping data come from?

This snapshot's listings come from: Volunteer.gov feed (788), KOA campground listings (156), Manually curated listings (95), Employer-posted listings (22), USAJOBS (9). Employer-posted listings are counted only when approved and not expired. See the methodology section for eligibility and counting rules.

Seasonal Hiring Trends

General seasonal context (editorial; not calculated from the figures above): federal campground host positions typically open for spring and summer recruitment (March–May), with fall closings in October–November. Private campground and KOA positions tend to hire year-round in warm-weather states, while northern and high-elevation locations follow strict seasonal windows.

  • Peak Season (May – September): Highest listing volume. Federal campgrounds fully staffed; private resort demand at maximum.
  • Shoulder Season (March–April, October): Active hiring period. Federal agencies post upcoming summer positions; some year-round private parks hiring.
  • Off Season (November – February): Lower federal listing volume. Southern and coastal private campgrounds remain active; snowbird destinations peak.

As HitchPath collects additional historical listing data over time, month-by-month hiring trend charts will appear here.

Annual Workamping Report

HitchPath is preparing its first annual workamping industry report — a comprehensive analysis covering hiring trends, employer demand, compensation benchmarks, state-by-state analysis, and seasonal patterns. The report will be freely available to RVers, employers, journalists, and researchers.

The report will include: job listing data by state, paid vs. volunteer compensation analysis, top employer types and hiring patterns, and RV site inclusion rates by region. Sign up for the newsletter to be notified when it is ready.
