Historic Craft Demonstrator - Mabry Mill - Blue Ridge Parkway

The National Park Service is seeking Historic Craft Demonstrator Volunteers to serve at Mabry Mill, Milepost 176.2, Blue Ridge Parkway. The Volunteers present hands-on or interpretive demonstrations—such as blacksmithing, woodworking, basketry, or other period crafts—to help the public understand the cultural heritage of the Virginia section of the Parkway.

The Mabry’s began developing the property in the early 1900s. Ed first built a blacksmith and wheelwright shop around 1900–1901. Between 1903 and 1905, the Mabry’s acquired water rights and land to construct their gristmill, which was completed around 1908. Over time they added a sawmill, woodworking shop, and additional workspaces, creating a full homestead economy built on skill, perseverance, and resourcefulness.

Mabry Mill is one of the most iconic and photographed sites on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its significance comes not only from its picturesque setting, but also from the story of the couple who built and operated it, Ed and Lizzie Mabry, and the community life it supported.

Major Duties

• Present engaging, accurate, and safe demonstrations of one or more historic crafts at Mabry Mill.

• Interact with visitors, answer questions, and interpret the significance of traditional skills to Appalachian life.

• Set up, operate, and maintain demonstration equipment and tools according to safety procedures.

• Work collaboratively with Parkway staff and other demonstrators, including blacksmith interpreters already active at Mabry Mill.

• Assist with care, cleaning, and organization of the demonstration area.

• Report volunteer hours as required by park protocol (online reporting link referenced in enterprise communications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Interest in Appalachian history, folkways, or historic crafts.

• Willingness to learn and follow NPS interpretive and safety standards.

• Ability to communicate clearly with diverse audiences.

• Prior experience with the chosen craft is helpful but not always required; training may be provided depending on the craft and staff availability.

• Ability to work independently and outdoors in changing weather.

Time Commitment

Volunteer is expected to serve at least 5 hours per week, but the time commitment is flexible and can be modified after discussion with the National Park Service Volunteer Supervisor.
