Mail, Domicile, and Banking: Solving the Full-Time RV Logistics Puzzle

Full-time RV life requires solving problems that don't exist for people with fixed addresses. Mail needs a permanent home. Vehicles need to be registered somewhere. Health insurance depends on your state of legal residence. Banking needs to work from anywhere. Each piece is solvable — just not automatically.

Choosing a Domicile State

Your domicile is your legal home state — where you're a legal resident for tax, registration, and insurance purposes. For full-time RVers, this is a deliberate choice rather than an inherited default.

The three states most commonly chosen by full-timers are South Dakota, Texas, and Florida. All three have no state income tax. All three have accessible residency establishment processes that don't require extended physical presence. All three have developed mail forwarding services and infrastructure specifically built around full-timer needs.

Mail Forwarding

A mail forwarding service provides a physical street address in your domicile state, receives your mail, and forwards it to wherever you are — or holds it for pickup when you pass through. Escapees RV Club and America's Mailbox are purpose-built for this use case and are well-known in the full-timer community.

The practical setup: give your forwarding address to financial institutions, the IRS, and anyone who sends physical mail. Establish a monthly forwarding routine. Set up digital statements and email delivery for everything that supports it.

Banking That Works Anywhere

Most major banks work fine from anywhere with mobile deposits and online bill pay. The workamper-specific consideration: accounts with no or low ATM fees, since you'll often be using non-network ATMs.

Charles Schwab's investor checking account, which reimburses all ATM fees nationwide, is frequently recommended in the full-timer community. It's worth evaluating based on your own banking patterns.

Vehicle Registration

Vehicles are registered in your domicile state. For South Dakota and Texas domiciles, the process is typically handled through the state DMV and mail forwarding services that assist with the paperwork — one-time establishment with annual renewal.
