The workamping hiring calendar is genuinely counterintuitive. Campgrounds don't recruit year-round — they recruit in concentrated bursts tied to season openers and operational timelines that most first-time applicants never anticipate.
Summer placements recruit from December through March. By February, the best national park and Army Corps host sites are fielding strong applications. By April, most are filled.
If you want a summer placement at a desirable federal site, January is not too early to start. If you're applying in May, you're looking at whatever wasn't taken.
Fall positions at leaf-peeping destinations in New England and Appalachia recruit in spring. Winter positions in Arizona, Florida, southern Texas, and the California desert recruit midsummer and are typically gone well before the season begins.
First-time workampers who target fall or winter placements instead of summer often find more availability and less competition. The weather in many fall destinations is also excellent — arguably better than peak summer at some elevations.
Federal agency positions run on formal seasonal schedules. Forest districts open applications on specific dates — sometimes as early as October for the following summer. Following parks and districts on Volunteer.gov and checking regularly is the only reliable way to catch these windows.
Private campgrounds are looser. Established operations with organized host programs recruit earlier. Small independents sometimes fill positions with two weeks' notice.

Applying for fall and winter while other workampers scramble for summer is one of the most effective tactics in the game. Employers in less-crowded seasons often have more time to evaluate applicants carefully.
