Starlink is SpaceX's low-earth-orbit satellite internet constellation. Unlike traditional satellite internet services (HughesNet, ViaSat), which use a single geostationary satellite 22,000 miles above the equator, Starlink uses thousands of satellites orbiting at 350–1,200 miles altitude. The shorter distance dramatically reduces latency — from 600–800ms with traditional satellite down to 20–60ms with Starlink.
For RVers, this means Starlink is usable for video calls, streaming, and remote work — things that were essentially impossible on older satellite systems.
SpaceX offers several plans, and the right one depends on how you use your RV:
Cost: ~$150/month Hardware: $599 one-time (flat rectangular dish)
This is the plan most full-time RVers and workampers use. Key features:
Speeds: 25–220 Mbps download; 5–20 Mbps upload. Highly variable depending on location and network load.
Cost: ~$120/month at a fixed address Hardware: Same dish
If you establish service at a fixed address (your domicile), you can technically move the dish. But residential service is deprioritized when outside your service area and isn't designed for full-time mobile use. The RV plan is the correct product for full-timers.
Cost: $250/month+ Hardware: High-performance dish, larger and more expensive
For people who depend on internet for significant income (remote workers, content creators), Priority offers higher speeds and network priority over standard and RV-tier users. This can make a real difference in congested areas.
Option 1: Ground deployment (simplest) Set the base mount on level ground outside your RV and run the cable through a window or door. This works well at campgrounds where you can place the dish in the open and reposition it if needed.
Option 2: Roof mount (permanent) Aftermarket roof mounts attach to your RV's roof rack or create a dedicated low-profile mount. The dish is always deployed when you arrive; you connect the cable rather than setting up the full system.
Option 3: Ladder or cargo carrier mount Some RVers mount a fixed bracket to the rear ladder or a cargo carrier. Lower than a roof mount, but easier to adjust.
Option 4: Tripod or portable stand A ground tripod raises the dish to clear small obstructions (shrubs, fencing) without roof mounting. Highly portable. Good for workampers who need to position the dish based on each site's sky view.
Note: Starlink's standard dish is rated for outdoor use but not for use while the vehicle is in motion. You must stop and set up the dish before use.
The most important thing to understand about Starlink: it needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky, primarily toward the north (in North America).
What obstructs Starlink:
The Starlink app has a sky obstruction checker — download the app before your placement and use your phone's camera to scan the sky at the host site. The app will tell you whether that location has sufficient sky view for reliable service. Do this before you commit to a site at a heavily forested campground.
At a national forest campground with heavy tree cover, Starlink may work intermittently — good when the satellite is directly overhead, dropping during the parts of the orbital path blocked by trees. This is frustrating for video calls but manageable for asynchronous work.
At an open Arizona desert RV park, Starlink will likely work near-perfectly with minimal interruptions.
First setup usually takes 15–30 minutes. Subsequent setups at new locations take 5–10 minutes.
The Starlink RV plan allows you to pause service for full months at a time — you won't be charged during a paused month. This is valuable for:
Many workampers pause Starlink during their stay at a well-connected resort and resume it when heading to a remote national forest.
Starlink RV doesn't have a data cap in the traditional sense, but during network congestion, RV-tier users are deprioritized below residential and Priority-tier users. In dense urban areas or at campground rallies where many Starlink users are present simultaneously, speeds may drop.
For most workamping situations — rural campgrounds, national forests, dispersed camping areas — congestion is not a significant issue.
Starlink alone isn't sufficient for all situations:

The ideal setup: Starlink for your primary connection at stationary placements, cellular data as a backup and for use while driving or in locations where Starlink can't be deployed. Many workampers also use a cellular signal booster (WeBoost, Pepwave) to extend their cellular backup in areas with marginal coverage.
Yes, where there's sky view. Dense forest canopy is the primary obstacle. Open meadow campgrounds and rim-edge campsites work well. Narrow canyon campgrounds often don't.
The dish must be outside. The router can be inside, and your devices connect to it via WiFi anywhere in the rig. The signal penetrates RV walls easily.
Rain and clouds have minimal impact on Starlink (unlike older satellite systems). Heavy snow accumulation on the dish can cause outages — the dish does have heating capability that melts light accumulation, but heavy snow requires clearing manually.
Yes. The dish, router, and power supply are a self-contained unit you can move between vehicles or use at a fixed home base when not on the road.
Replacement hardware is available through Starlink at current retail pricing. Insurance coverage varies — check your RV or homeowner's policy for electronics coverage.
