Campground Host - Lone Rock Campground - Fall/Winter 2026/2027

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is seeking friendly, safety-minded campground hosts for Lone Rock Beach Primitive Camping Area on Lake Powell for the Summer/Fall 2026 season. The position may begin on site as early as August 2026 - following interview and reference checks.

Lone Rock is a popular, scenic, and very busy primitive beach/dune camping area near the Wahweap District of Glen Canyon, just off U.S. Highway 89 near the Utah/Arizona state line. Visitors come for shoreline camping, lake views, swimming, boating access from shore, and Glen Canyon’s only designated ORV area. Lone Rock is primitive and exposed: there are no designated campsites [other than the 2 full-hookup host sites], no reservations, and conditions can change quickly with weather, lake levels, soft sand, and visitor use.

Campground hosts provide a welcoming NPS volunteer presence and help visitors understand how to recreate safely and responsibly. Hosts answer routine questions, explain current campground information, provide non-enforcement visitor orientation, conduct roves by foot and authorized personal vehicle, report maintenance/sanitation/safety/resource issues, and help communicate current NPS messages about fees, no-reservation/first-come camping, quiet hours, pets, trash, fire restrictions, no glass containers, ORV boundaries, soft sand, no-lifeguard water safety, and Leave No Trace.

This is not a law enforcement, fee collection, towing/recovery, rescue, custodial, plumbing, electrical, or heavy maintenance position. Hosts observe and report concerns to NPS staff and do not physically intervene in conflicts or emergencies.

Living and site conditions: The host site is at Lone Rock Beach Primitive Camping Area. The exact host pad, utility hookups, and arrival instructions will be confirmed before onboarding. The host site is exposed desert/beach terrain with little to no natural shade. Applicants should be prepared for direct sun, high UV, heat, wind, blowing sand/dust, soft sand, and limited/variable cell service. A personal RV/camper suitable for hot desert conditions, with reliable air conditioning, is strongly recommended and may be required. Average Page/Lone Rock-area temperatures during the anticipated service term are approximately: August 93°F high/71°F low, September 85°F/63°F, October 71°F/51°F, and November 56°F/39°F. Early August can be hotter, with typical daily highs around 95°F and occasional days over 100°F.

Time commitment: 32 hours per week per individual volunteer, generally 4–5 days per week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. If two volunteers share one RV/site, each volunteer must serve 32 hours per week. The draft service term is August 1, 2026 through the calendar year (may be extended), with exact dates to be confirmed by GLCA.

Provided by the park: approved VIP uniform items as available, site-specific training, government radio for duty communications, and an RV host site/pad if available and approved. GLCA does not provide reimbursement for travel, fuel, food, laundry, propane, personal equipment, RV repairs, or other out-of-pocket expenses unless an exception is approved in writing before service.

Strong applicants will enjoy public contact, be calm and tactful in busy outdoor settings, communicate clearly by radio/phone, follow chain-of-command and safety procedures, understand their non-enforcement role, and be comfortable living in an exposed desert campground with little shade. A valid driver’s license is required for authorized personal vehicle use during assigned duties.

Before applying, ask yourself the following:

• Can you provide a self-contained RV/camper suitable for exposed desert conditions with little/no shade and high August temperatures?
• Are you comfortable serving 32 hours/week per individual volunteer, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and high-use periods?
• Are you comfortable with a non-enforcement role where you observe/report and do not collect fees, direct traffic, tow/recover vehicles, rescue swimmers, or physically intervene?
• Do you have a valid driver’s license and are you willing to complete GLCA license self-certification for authorized POV (personal vehicle) use?
• Do you understand that GLCA does not reimburse travel, fuel, food, propane, RV repairs, personal gear, or other incidental expenses?
