Winter Visitor Safety Volunteer

The individual will volunteer with the visitor services and fees program at Yellowstone National Park. The volunteer works under the supervision of the park’s deputy fee manager and south entrance lead recreation fee technician and is duty stationed at the Snake River Ranger Station at the south entrance. Major duties may include:

• Working in the Snake River Ranger Station to charge appropriate entrance fees to guided snowmobile and snowcoach groups;
• Issuing non-commercially guided snowmobile access program (NCGSAP) permits;
• Providing safety and weather information to park visitors and commercial use authorization (CUA) guides;
• Assisting in snowmobile patrols to Grant Village to check road conditions and deliver mail;
• Providing up to date information to visitors and guides about road closures and monitoring the gate if the South Entrance Rd closes;
• Monitoring and utilizing park radios to stay up to date on road conditions and other safety information;
• Assisting in ranger station maintenance, including light snow removal, splitting firewood, and destruction of old documents;
• Updating fee manuals and pamphlets for 2027 and re-organizing document and pamphlet storage in the ranger station.

The work schedule is flexible and will likely include shifts eight hours per day for four days per week. The volunteer will wear the standardized winter VIP uniform. The park provides the VIP shirt, coat, hat, and name tag. The park will also provide a helmet, bib, and coat for snowmobile operation.

The Snake River Ranger Station is only accessible by snowmobile, cross-country skis, or snowshoes in the winter. The park will provide snowmobile training and scheduled access to a pool snowmobile. The Snake River Ranger Station and residential area are two miles away from Flagg Ranch, where personal vehicles are parked.

Park housing will be available for a volunteer working at least 32 hours per week. Pets are not permitted.
