Location: Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger District, Cherokee National Forest
The Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger District is currently seeking enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to serve as campground hosts at the Chilhowee Recreation Area Campground. This scenic 80-site campground is divided into three loops and accommodates both RVs and tents, offering a rewarding opportunity to support public land stewardship in a beautiful mountain setting.
Campground Features:
- 80 campsites across three loops (Loops A-B, C-D, and E–F)
- Water hydrants located throughout the campground
- Electrical and non-electric sites available
- Dump station for sewer disposal and potable water refills
- Flush toilets and showers on site
Host Site Details:
- Hosts are needed for each loop
- A/B and C/D host site have full hookup (Water, Electric, Sewer)
- Loops B and E–F host sites offer water and electric hookups (no sewer)
- Volunteers must provide their own RV/camper and transportation
Seasonal Information:
- Main campground operates from early April through early November
- Overflow camping and day-use areas remain open year-round and are also maintained by hosts
Recreation Highlights:
- 7-acre McKamy Lake with a sandy swim beach, fishing, and picnic areas
- Non-motorized boating permitted
- Approximately 25 miles of hiking and biking trails
- Scenic waterfall and multiple mountain/lake overlooks along the access road
- Abundant wildlife and photography opportunities
Directions:
From the Ocoee Ranger Station, turn left onto paved Forest Road 77. Travel approximately 7.3 miles to the campground entrance sign and turn right.
