Duties:            

  • Trail Stewards will safely and independently remove downed branches, small trees (under 6 inches in diameter), and side vegetation from trails using hand saws and loppers.
  • Remove litter on and near trails and in other areas of the park.
  • Trail Stewards will report uncleared trail obstructions and changing trail conditions to the supervisor.
  • Attend workshops and trainings to develop skills related to trail maintenance.

Length of Service:

Position will run throughout the year. Volunteer is expected to survey at least 2 trails per month.


Lodging:

• Please note that housing is not available for this position

 

Tools, Equipment, & Vehicles:

  • Basic hand tools (training will be provided on tools used within this position) 

Location:

Specific location will vary, but will be limited to the various established trails within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to safely navigate trails within the park using designated park maps
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and non-verbal)
  • Ability to hike over steep, uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery terrain
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions to include cold and hot weather, rain, smoke, and snow.

  • Equipment operation/tool use
  • Slips, trips, and falls
  • Adverse weather conditions (heat, sun exposure, thunderstorms)
  • Environmental hazards (poison oak, wildlife/insect bites and stings, etc.)
