Hurricane Campground Host

Perched in the Appalachian Mountains, Hurricane Campground is part of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.  Hike the Appalachian Trail, take a bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail or drive the Mount Rogers Scenic Highway. With over 500 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as numerous fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing areas throughout the recreation area, this campground is perfect for people who want to enjoy an assortment of different outdoor activities. 

Hurricane Campground is a small, 27- site campground located at 2021 Hurricane Camp Rd, Sugar Grove, VA, 15 miles from the town of Marion and about 5 miles from Sugar Grove, Virginia. Hurricane Campground has the remote setting, without being too far from town. The campground is open from mid-April thru late-October.

Hurricane and Comers creeks pass through the campground and surrounding areas allowing for wading and trout fishing. Additional fishing options and excellent hunting opportunities are available near the campground. State fishing and hunting regulations and licensing requirements apply. Hurricane Knob Nature Trail offers a brisk 1-mile loop hike and there is easy access to the Appalachian Trail within ½ mile. The Virginia Creeper Trail is located a short drive away. The entire campground has a relaxing, rustic atmosphere and an open field allows for games and family fun.

The full-service town of Marion, VA is a 20-minute drive, and the community of Sugar Grove is less than 5 minutes away. Sugar Grove has fuel, a post office, and convenience stores.  Satellite TV and Starlink are available if you have your own service. Cell phone coverage is not available in the campground. 

Volunteers are provided with a campsite with water, electricity, and sewer hook-ups. Telephone service is not available in the campground.   A volunteer trail camp (15 minutes) is available for laundry facilities.  Campsites are available for volunteers from mid-April through November. In exchange for the free campsite and utilities, we ask our volunteers to help at least four hours per day, five days per week per person. Due to weekends being our busiest time, we will schedule "days off" for less busy weekdays.  Sometimes needs change within the recreation area, and you may be asked to assist with other volunteer responsibilities other than what you initially “signed up” for.  Just let me know what type of position suits your interests and when you would be interested in volunteering (specific dates). To assist with scheduling and site availability, we request that our volunteers stay at least 4 weeks, typically arriving at the first of the month and leaving at the end of the month.

Host(s) will represent the Forest Service in public contacts, providing information and directions, and reporting vandalism and other problems to Forest Service personnel. A golf cart, all necessary tools, and cleaning supplies, safety equipment, will be provided by the Forest Service. Campground host training and orientation will also be provided by the Forest Service.
