Major Muskrat Mascot

The Volunteer Educational Mascot plays a vital role in the park's youth engagement and community outreach initiatives by performing as "Major Muskrat," the official mascot of River Raisin National Battlefield Park. This position is designed to bring history and preservation themes to life for young children, school field trips, and families through enthusiastic, non-verbal animation and costumed performance. The mascot acts as a primary catalyst for welcoming visitors, sparking interest in park programs, and creating memorable, positive experiences that support the park's interpretive mission.

Key Responsibilities

·        Costumed Performance: Don the full Major Muskrat costume to perform at special events, Phase 1 Education Center programs, and community parades or festivals.

·        Public Engagement: Greet and interact enthusiastically with a diverse public, specializing in welcoming school groups, children, and families.

·        Non-Verbal Communication: Use expressive body language, gestures, and animations to convey emotion and character traits without speaking while in costume.

·        Mascot Escort Collaboration: Work closely with a designated, un-costumed volunteer or staff handler who guides movement, assists with navigation, and speaks on the mascot's behalf.

·        Safety & Representation: Maintain a safe environment for yourself and visitors, strictly adhering to safe movement practices and protecting the positive image of the National Park Service.
