Pull out that needle and thread and let’s get sewing!

Ninety Six is seeking volunteers to help with modern sewing projects as well as living history sewing projects. Volunteers may take on both projects or just one.

Projects:

Modern projects include:

·        Ensuring all required volunteer uniform items (shirts, hats, and jackets) are in good condition and have the required patch in the correct location

·        Assisting the parks volunteer manager with uniform inventory

Living History projects include but are not limited to:

·        Repairing colonial and Revolutionary Era clothing using period correct material and techniques

·        Sewing period correct clothes such as shirts, breeches, coats, gowns, etc.

·        Assisting park staff with origination and inventory of period clothing

·        Providing sewing demonstrations in period clothing for the public during events and predetermined weekends

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Prior skill and ability to sew within the parameters of the chosen project without more than basic instruction from park staff. All volunteers will be screened for prior proficiency in sewing. Please have a few of your favorite projects to show off for an in-person or online interview!

The ability to help train other volunteers to repair and care for period clothing is a plus but not required.

Attention to detail.

Comfort talking to the public (living history).

Ability to learn the basic history of the park as well as the history of the types of clothes being created or repaired (living history).

Material and Reimbursement:

The park will provide the materials such as fabric, thread, and patches needed for each project. The volunteer should work with the staff to determine what materials are needed for projects before starting. Volunteers may use their own sewing machine, but the park is not responsible for any damage.

Age and schedule requirements:

Minimum Age: 14 years, all volunteers under 18 must have parent/guardian permission and should reach out directly to adrian_stewart@nps.gov to apply

Minimum Time Requirement: varies depending on project 

Anticipated work schedule: the volunteer will work with the Park’s interpretation staff to determine their schedule
