This volunteer position will:

  • Serve primarily at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center (CHVC), providing welcoming, accurate, and professional visitor services to the public.
  • Staff the visitor center information desk and greet visitors upon arrival.
  • Assess visitor needs and provide current information about Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, nearby public lands, recreational opportunities, facilities, services, closures, and conditions.
  • Respond professionally and patiently to frequent and repetitive visitor questions in person and by telephone.
  • Distribute maps, brochures, park publications, and other approved informational materials.
  • Monitor brochure and publication supplies and restock public information areas as needed.
  • Provide visitors with information about park regulations, resource protection, and safety concerns in a courteous, educational, and non-enforcement capacity.
  • Encourage voluntary compliance with park regulations through education and appropriate visitor contacts. Volunteers will not act in a law enforcement capacity and will refer enforcement concerns to appropriate NPS staff.
  • Provide informal interpretation and orientation throughout the park when assigned, including helping visitors understand park resources, significance, recreational opportunities, and responsible visitation practices.
  • With appropriate training, preparation, and supervisory approval, develop and/or present formal interpretive or educational programs, demonstrations, talks, or other visitor programs.
  • Use approved NPS computers, information systems, network resources, telephones, and other office equipment as necessary to provide visitor information and carry out assigned duties.
  • Maintain required visitor-use, interpretive-contact, program attendance, or other operational statistics and records.
  • Assist with established visitor center opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain orderly, welcoming public-contact areas by completing light housekeeping tasks such as dusting exhibits and counters, organizing public areas, and cleaning informational displays or outdoor wayside signs as assigned.
  • Receive, document, secure, and report lost-and-found property in accordance with established park procedures.
  • Remain attentive to visitor and workplace safety concerns and promptly report hazards, accidents, incidents, suspicious activity, or other concerns through the designated chain of communication.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and other incidents within the limits of assigned duties, completed training, and established park procedures, including promptly requesting assistance from appropriate emergency personnel.
  • Handle difficult visitor contacts and sensitive subjects professionally, calmly, and respectfully, and promptly notify the volunteer supervisor or other designated staff when additional assistance is needed.
  • Maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with NPS employees, volunteers, partners, concessioners, and members of the public.
  • Operate a Government-Owned Vehicle (GOV) and/or authorized Personally Owned Vehicle (POV), when approved and necessary for official volunteer duties, including travel to other park locations to provide visitor services or support programs.
  • Perform visitor-service duties at other locations within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area as operational needs require and as directed by the supervisor.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the supervisor regarding visitor needs and opportunities to improve the safety, efficiency, accessibility, and effectiveness of visitor services and interpretive operations.
  • Perform other closely related visitor-service duties consistent with the approved Volunteer Service Agreement, position description, training, and Job Hazard Analysis.

Additional Information and Volunteer Requirements:

Applicants must commit to a minimum of 3 months. Government-provided housing is available only to volunteers who commit to and maintain at least 32 hours of volunteer service per week. Housing is provided at no cost and includes a private bedroom in a shared apartment with a shared bathroom. The selected volunteer must successfully complete a required background investigation for network access and be willing and eligible to operate a Government-Owned Vehicle (GOV) and/or authorized Personally Owned Vehicle (POV) for official duties. This position supports visitor services during the winter season following the departure of summer seasonal staff.
