Lake Mead - Government Wash Primitive Campground Host

COMMITMENT: The primitive campground host at Government Wash must commit to a minimum of three months or longer to participate in the program. Currently, the park can provide electricity to the site. Volunteer will need to regularly go to the nearest NPS campground (Callville Bay or Las Vegas Bay) to fill their water tank and empty their grey/black water tank. Besides electricity, the site has an awning, picnic table, and BBQ ring.

GOAL: The purpose of the primitive campground host position is to be the eyes and ears of the park and offer campers the opportunity to engage early on with a park representative. The host will provide positive educational interactions with campers about backcountry camping rules and regulations, what recreational opportunities are available, and assist with keeping the area clean.  

RESPONSIBILITIES/DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The responsibilities of the campground host are as follows:

• Public Interactions: Meet, greet, and educate campground visitors on the rules and regulations of the campground and the park, as well as, to share knowledge of the wealth of available recreational opportunities in the area. During day light hours, the host is required to do two rounds through the area talking to campers and day use visitors.
• Light Mainenance: Hosts are responsible for keeping the area clean. While walking through the campground, hosts should pick up any visible litter using trash bags or buckets and dispose of properly. Volunteer will assist with cleaning out fire rings in designated sites and align rocks to designate a site if rocks are kicked out of place. 
• Reporting Emergencies or other disturbances: The volunteer will be required to monitor a park radio to communicate assistance, requests to receive direction, or to report emergency incidents to the Lake Mead Communications Center. Hosts may be the first point of contact for NPS regarding accidents/incidents and should gather as much information as possible before providing the information to LE or other emergency personnel. 

 Qualifications: Volunteer must be an adult and possess the following:

●      Must provide their own RV that is fully contained.

●      Must enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds

●      Excellent communication skills

●      Ability to work outside in a wide variety of weather conditions (wind, heat, cold)

●      Ability to handle potential conflicts with tact and diplomacy

●      Must be able to walk two to five miles a day on uneven desert terrain and surfaces.
