Cannon Crew Volunteer

Cannon Crew Volunteers at Fort Pulaski National Monument support the National Park Service’s mission by demonstrating historic weapons while using a living history approach. Cannon Crew Volunteers immerse visitors in the sights, sounds, and stories of Fort Pulaski National Monument during the American Civil War. These volunteers work as a team to operate Fort Pulaski’s 12-pound Howitzer and 30-pound Parrott Rifle under the direction of an NPS-certified Historic Weapons Supervisor. Cannon Crew Volunteers also provide informal interpretation for visitors to Fort Pulaski. Cannon Crew Volunteers must live within Fort Pulaski National Monument's local commuting area (within 50 miles of the park).

Cannon Crew Volunteers must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. These volunteers must also be able to work as part of a team. When Cannon Crew Volunteers work with the public, they practice active listening and are effective communicators. They work hard to understand both NPS policy and Fort Pulaski National Monument local policy to enhance visitor safety while at the park. They are team players who support park staff, and as respected members of the park team, they provide constructive feedback about park operations or problems they are experiencing to supervisors.

Safety is the most important part of this role. Volunteers will be expected to uphold the standard of safety set by Fort Pulaski National Monument’s Historic Weapons Program Supervisor.

 Duties:

• Volunteers at least one day per month (one 8-hour shift).
• Wear American Civil War period uniforms that serve as flame resistant personal protective equipment (PPE). 
• Work outdoors for long periods of time, sometimes in heat, cold, rain, or snow, wearing historic clothing.
• Successfully complete annual training in the use and interpretation of historic weapons and passes all competency evaluations.
• Participates in interpretive programs featuring the use of material culture items (clothing, tools, weapons, etc.) of the American Civil War.
• Arrive on time for morning drill.
• Enforce safety range boundaries with visitors during demonstrations.
• Assist in cleaning weapons after demonstrations.
