Newberry National Volcanic Monument:

RV Hosts at Paulina Visitor Center

Location: Newberry Caldera, Deschutes National Forest, La Pine/Bend, OR

 

Seeking residential volunteers to serve as hosts at the historic Paulina Visitor Center in the Newberry Caldera.

***We provide gravel RV pad with full hookups, but you must provide trailer or motorhome***

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

The primary duties of the uniformed host position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Welcoming and orienting Monument visitors
  • Providing information on Monument sites and assisting with trip planning
  • Selling recreation passes/merchandise at the Paulina Visitor Center bookstore using a Square (tablet) point of sale register system
  • Opportunities for interpretation: such as guided hikes, Junior Ranger activities, trail roving
  • Special interpretive projects according to skills and interests
  • Willingness to assist with light-duty cleaning and maintenance
  • Operates radio to communicate with rangers and other staff

SCHEDULE

Volunteers are asked to work 8-hour shifts, 4 days per week. Most scheduled hours will be during daylight hours, typically between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cash handling and record-keeping experience is helpful
  • Strong customer service skills and enthusiasm for serving the public
  • Effective communication with diverse audiences
  • A friendly and helpful attitude, and patience with repetitive questions and tasks
  • Interest in learning about the volcanic and cultural history of the area
  • Must be able to perform required duties with minimal supervision after training
  • Moderate fitness level and ability to hike up to 3 miles is desired

If accepted, you will be assigned a Forest Service lead who will check you in and out of your quarters, check out a uniform, create your schedule, and be your day to day supervisor for the season.
