Interpretive Guide

Volunteer positions within the Division of Interpretation and Education (I&E) at River Raisin National Battlefield Park (RIRA) are vital to supporting park rangers and enhancing the overall visitor experience. The Interpretive Guide role helps fulfill the park’s goal of enriching visitors’ enjoyment and understanding of River Raisin NBP and the broader regional and national impacts in the United States. Volunteers play a key role in welcoming visitors, sharing relevant information, and serving as stewards of the park’s interpretive mission throughout museum spaces, visitor facilities, and public programs.



Description of Duties

Interpretive Guides support River Raisin NBP’s visitor engagement and educational efforts by providing a welcoming, informative, and enriching presence throughout the park. Volunteers in this role serve as key points of contact for visitors and contribute to positive and memorable experiences by delivering interpretive services and fostering visitor connections to the park’s resources.

Interpretive Guide responsibilities include:

·        Assisting interpretive staff by greeting visitors, providing orientation, and answering questions about the park’s features, programs, and policies.

·        Presenting formal and informal interpretive programs, including guided tours, fixed-station talks, unstructured roving interpretation, and hands-on activities.

·        Facilitating special events, supporting both logistical needs and visitor engagement. Volunteers often multitask, particularly while facilitating a hands-on activity or formal/informal interpretation. 

·        Distributing mission-related materials such as Junior Ranger activity booklets, badges, and informational brochures.

·        Monitoring visitor safety and resource protection by helping to secure park facilities and reporting concerns or incidents to the Lead Ranger or appropriate staff.

·        Performing routine administrative tasks in support of interpretive operations, such as answering the telephone and recording visitation statistics.

·        Maintaining a professional, approachable, and courteous demeanor as a representative of the National Park Service.
