Volunteer events at Lake Mead National Recreation Area help NPS staff accomplish priority work while also engaging with individuals and groups from the surrounding communities. LAKE hosts several volunteer events during the fall and spring seasons. While most events are on Saturdays, there are occasional weekday events to accommodate school and business groups. Event activities may include litter cleanup, weed removal, seed collection, seed cleaning, transplanting at the nursery, habitat restoration, and much more. The fall event season will kick off starting with National Public Lands Day on September 26, 2026.

LAKE is currently recruiting volunteers who are interested in assisting at volunteer events as Event Assistants. Event Assistant volunteer duties may include assisting with:

·        Event set-up and takedown

·        Reviewing event participant paperwork during registration

·        High quality customer service to event assistants

·        Roving (walking around) during the volunteer event

During setup and take down, volunteers will assist NPS staff with setting up equipment such as tables, chairs, shade canopies, water jugs, signage, and event supplies such as trash grabbers, buckets, safety vests, vegetation pruners, and other tools depending on the type of event.

Event Assistant VIPs also play a crucial role when it comes to event safety. While roving during an event, they may check up on the event participants ensuring that they are taking breaks, drinking water, and answering questions, and know what to do in case of an emergency.

Volunteers must be available for at least 2 volunteer events per season, and shifts are usually 3-4 hours. Shifts depend on specific event times which are subject to change depending on location, group type, event type, and other factors. However, a typical Saturday morning shift will start with meeting around 8:00 am at the designated location and wrapping up the event at approximately 12:00 pm.

Volunteers will need reliable transportation to get themselves to and from the volunteer events. Most events take place in the Boulder Basin area (~30 minutes from Las Vegas). For events that are a longer distance from Boulder City, Event Assistants may have the opportunity to meet NPS staff in Boulder City to carpool in a government vehicle. While not required, if an Event Assistant would like to operate a government vehicle themselves, a 3-year driving record from the DMV must be submitted and the volunteer will be trained.

Please note: Interested volunteers are required to attend an initial 4-hour training which covers a program overview, logistics, park information, and safety. This year’s training will be held on Friday, September 18 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Other optional/supplemental training is offered throughout the year.
