Fall 2026 Visitor Services Volunteer – Chiricahua National Monument

Come Experience "The Wonderland of Rocks"!

Would you like to spend a season surrounded by the breathtaking pinnacles of Chiricahua National Monument, while helping visitors discover one of Arizona's most remarkable landscapes?

Chiricahua National Monument is looking for a friendly, enthusiastic, and dependable volunteer to join our visitor services team. Located in southeastern Arizona, Chiricahua is known for its spectacular "standing up rocks," beautiful Sky Island environment, abundant wildlife, dark skies, and more than 17 miles of hiking trails.

As a Visitor Services Volunteer, you will help visitors make the most of their time at Chiricahua while gaining experience working alongside National Park Service staff in a busy visitor center.

About the Position

Visitor Services Volunteers are an important part of the visitor experience at Chiricahua. You will welcome visitors from around the world, answer questions, share information about the park, and help people discover the stories and resources that make Chiricahua special.

Typical duties include:

• Welcoming visitors to the park and providing excellent customer service.
• Answering questions about trails, scenic viewpoints, wildlife, camping, safety, and other park resources.
• Helping visitors plan their time at Chiricahua and recommending appropriate activities based on their interests and abilities.
• Providing information about park programs, special events, and other opportunities.
• Assisting with visitor center operations.
• Operating a cash register and assisting with retail sales.
• Helping maintain an organized, welcoming, and visitor-ready environment.
• Occasionally roving trails or other areas of the park to engage with visitors and provide informal interpretation.
• Working closely with park staff and other volunteers as part of the interpretation and visitor services team.

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves national parks, enjoys meeting people, and wants to share their enthusiasm for the outdoors with others.

Timeframe & Schedule

September 8, 2026 – January 2, 2027

Visitor Services Volunteers work 32 hours per week, generally four 8-hour shifts. Weekend coverage is required.

A minimum three-month commitment is required.

Training

You don't need to be a National Park Service expert to be successful in this position!

Volunteers will receive training from the supervisor and other park staff based on their previous NPS experience and familiarity with visitor services.

Candidates who are new to the National Park Service may receive one week of training. Online training webinars and workshops may also be provided for required and supplemental learning.

Training will include information about the park's natural and cultural resources, visitor services, safety, operations, and other duties associated with the position.

A background check is required for this volunteer position.

Your Campsite & Amenities

Candidates must have a fully contained van, RV, or motorhome under 30 feet in length to be considered for this position.

The National Park Service provides a free full-hookup campsite at no cost to the volunteer.

The site includes:

• Electricity
• Water
• Sewer
• Wi-Fi

Volunteers also have access to:

• Laundry facilities
• Employee gym
• Employee swimming pool

The volunteer must provide their own RV, van, or motorhome. The National Park Service does not provide an RV or other housing.

Cell phone coverage in the park is limited, so volunteers should be comfortable spending time in a relatively remote environment.

We are looking for someone who is:

• Friendly, approachable, and enthusiastic about working with the public.
• Comfortable talking with visitors from a wide variety of backgrounds.
• Dependable and punctual.
• Able to learn and accurately communicate information about the park.
• Comfortable working independently while also being part of a team.
• Comfortable operating a cash register and following established procedures.
• Able to stand and work at a visitor center desk for extended periods.
• Interested in learning about the natural and cultural history of Chiricahua.
• Comfortable occasionally working outdoors and interacting with visitors on trails.
• At least 18 years old.

Chiricahua is more than just a place to volunteer — it's a place to experience.

Imagine stepping outside after your shift and finding yourself surrounded by the towering rock formations of the Wonderland of Rocks. You may encounter a coati, javelina, deer, or one of the many bird species that call the Sky Islands home.

On your days off, explore the park's hiking trails, photograph the spectacular landscape, enjoy a sunset from the scenic drive, or experience some of southern Arizona's darkest skies.

You will also have the opportunity to meet visitors from across the country and around the world and help them create their own memorable experience at Chiricahua.
