Red Rock Lakes NWR Maintenance Volunteer

Join the Red Rock Lakes NWR Team as a Summer Maintenance Volunteer! Support conservation efforts by helping maintain buildings, grounds, vehicles, and public facilities. Volunteers play a vital role in keeping the Refuge safe, clean, and welcoming for visitors and wildlife.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform general maintenance and repairs (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, trash/recycling, sign installation, kiosk refinishing).
• Maintain lawns and landscaping (watering, mowing, weeding, trimming).
• Operate vehicles and small equipment.
• Clean and restock public facilities, including restrooms and vault toilets.
• Conduct trail maintenance (brushing, debris clearing, erosion control, minor repairs).
• Monitor supplies and report needs to supervisor.
• Work cooperatively with Refuge staff, partners, and the public.

Requirements:

• Ability to lift and carry 30–50 pounds routinely.
• Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Completion of required paperwork and online defensive driving course before operating government vehicles.
• Adherence to safety protocols and use of protective equipment.
• Professional conduct and respect for all staff, volunteers, and visitors.
• Background Check prior to arrival

Schedule & Housing:

• Season length and schedule determined with Volunteer Coordinator.
• Minimum weekly hours: 48 per couple or 24 per individual per week.
• Weekend and holiday work may be required.
• Housing or RV site may be available; includes laundry and internet access.

Uniform & Conduct:

• Volunteers must wear issued uniform and represent the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service professionally.
• Maintain a healthy and productive living and working environment.
• Follow Refuge regulations and Department of the Interior ethics guidelines.
