The Community Outreach & Social Media Volunteer serves as an ambassador for River Raisin National Battlefield Park both in person and online. This role is essential for expanding the park’s visibility beyond its physical borders, connecting with diverse local and global audiences, and inviting the community to engage with the park's history, Education Center, and seasonal events. By distributing promotional literature, capturing event highlights, managing digital engagement, and maintaining a welcoming presence at external venues, volunteers help foster a deep public appreciation for regional history and conservation.


Core Duties & Responsibilities

  • Literature & Flyer Distribution: Coordinate the logistics, placement, and distribution of park brochures, educational pamphlets, and seasonal event flyers (such as promotions for youth summer camps or living history events).
  • Community Off-Site Presence: Assist park staff at informational booths during local farmers' markets, county fairs, library events, and regional heritage festivals.
  • Public Engagement: Proactively welcome and engage with members of the public. Answer basic inquiries regarding park hours, the visitor center, trail maps, and upcoming educational opportunities.
  • Social Media Content Creation: Draft engaging posts, capture high-quality event photography, and produce short-form video content (e.g., reels or stories) highlighting park history, battlefield landscapes, and live educational programming.
  • Digital Community Management: Assist staff in monitoring park social media channels, responding to basic public inquiries/comments in a timely and professional manner, and routing complex questions to appropriate staff members.
  • Information Refreshing: Periodically visit pre-approved community hubs (such as local visitor bureaus, community centers, schools, and historical societies) to restock information racks and replace outdated promotional materials.
  • Feedback Collection: Track public interest trends and note frequently asked questions from the community to help park staff refine future outreach materials and programming.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Outgoing and Approachable Demeanor: High level of comfort initiating positive, professional conversations with people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Ability to clearly communicate basic event logistics and represent the park with a friendly, collaborative, and inclusive tone—both verbally and in writing.
  •  Social Media Literacy: Proficiency with major digital platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) and a solid understanding of digital trends, photography, and online etiquette.
  •  Willingness to Learn: A desire to learn the fundamental history and layout of the battlefield and Education Center in order to accurately answer public and digital questions.
  •  Reliability and Independence: Ability to punctually attend scheduled off-site events, maintain a digital posting schedule, and handle assignments with minimal direct supervision.
  •  Transportation: Access to reliable transportation to travel to assigned off-site community venues.
