Field Trip Aide

The Field Trip Aide plays a vital role in supporting the park’s educational mission by helping to facilitate high-quality, engaging, and safe learning experiences for school groups, summer camps, and youth organizations. By assisting with logistics, group movement, and hands-on activities, this volunteer ensures that students have a memorable visit while learning about the complex history of the War of 1812, its aftermath, and the diverse perspectives of the region.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

Group Logistics & Welcome: Greet arriving school buses, assist teachers and chaperones with orientation, and help guide student groups to designated areas (such as the lunch layout or intro theater).

Station Facilitation: Help staff or lead educational activity stations, including historic games, living history demonstrations, or traditional crafts (such as candle-making or wampum education).

Crowd Control & Safety: Assist in managing large groups of students (ranging from K-12 to transitioning high school seniors), ensuring they stay with their assigned cohorts and move safely between indoor galleries and outdoor battlefield trails.

Material Preparation & Cleanup: Set up craft tables, organize historical props, and clean up activity areas between rotating groups to ensure smooth transitions.

Teacher & Chaperone Liaison: Serve as a friendly, accessible point of contact for adult leaders to help keep the school’s itinerary running precisely on time.

Qualifications

• 18 or older
• Enthusiasm for Youth Education: A genuine enjoyment of working with children and young adults of diverse ages and backgrounds.
• Communication Skills: A warm, friendly, and collaborative communication style. Ability to give clear, welcoming directions to large groups of students and adults.
• Flexibility: Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where schedules, group sizes, or weather conditions may change quickly.
• Interest in History: A willingness to learn about the park’s historical themes—specifically the War of 1812 and Indigenous perspectives—in order to accurately assist with programs.
• Background Clearance: Because this position involves direct, regular interaction with minors, compliance with standard National Park Service volunteer background checks and mandatory safety training is required.
