United States Colored Troops Living History Interpreter

The Emancipation Proclamation, supported by the U.S. victory at the Battle of Stones River, created opportunities for formerly enslaved men and free men of color to secure their freedom through military service. Soldiers in the United States Colored Troops played a critical role in the outcome of the Civil War, and their service had a profound effect on the political and social trends that came out of that conflict.

Help visitors go back in time and appreciate the stories of one of the most important battles of the American Civil War and the stories of United Sates Colored Troops who served in middle Tennessee. Volunteers will wear period military and civilian costumes and present programs that try to bring history to life.

Men, women, and youth are welcome to apply. Historic weapons demonstrators must be at least 16 years old (18 years for artillery).

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

• Individuals - Minimum of 8 weekend days a year (6-8 hour shifts)

SUPERVISOR: Historic Weapons Program Supervisor

DUTIES:

• Complete annual training in the use and interpretation of historic weapons and pass all written and practical evaluations.
• Participates in interpretive programs featuring the use of material culture items (clothing, tools, weapons, etc.) of the Civil War,
• Volunteers may be asked to research, prepare and present interpretive talks and/or first-person interpretive presentations based on their skills and interest.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
• Ability to work with a team,
• General knowledge of the Civil War and the Battle of Stones River are desirable, and
• Must be able to work outdoors for long periods of time wearing historic clothing.
