Join Us in Preserving the Trails of History and Nature

Are you passionate about stewardship, teamwork, and the great outdoors? First State National Historical Park is seeking committed individuals to serve as Trail Steward Leaders, guiding small volunteer teams in preserving and maintaining over 27 miles of trails and administrative roads in the Brandywine Valley.

As a Trail Steward Leader, you will support both people and landscapes—coordinating field projects, teaching safe tool use, and upholding NPS values like safety, Leave No Trace, and environmental care. This leadership role ensures that volunteers are empowered, informed, and engaged while contributing to the ongoing care of the park’s scenic and historic routes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead volunteer teams (4–6 individuals) on trail and administrative road maintenance projects.
  • Model and teach safe tool use, trail techniques, and National Park Service (NPS) work standards.
  • Host safety briefings, ensure project readiness, and match volunteers with suitable tasks.
  • Coordinate closely with park maintenance staff and the Volunteer Coordinator to plan and implement work.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles (e.g., UTVs, mowers, trailers) and perform light mechanical/tool maintenance.
  • Use mapping and documentation tools to assist in planning and recordkeeping.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates are comfortable leading teams outdoors, have basic mechanical and mapping skills, and are willing to learn NPS protocols. Familiarity with trail work or conservation practices is a plus but not required - training will be provided.
