Assist visitors who are exploring exhibits or planning a trip to an island by providing orientation and information about the park and its partner organizations. Help visitors make personal connections to the park’s natural and cultural history by engaging them in short activities or informal conversations. Answer telephone calls to the park’s main information line. Help keep brochure racks stocked and public spaces neat and clean. Operate an automated A/V system to play park films. Make sales using the park store’s cash register. Though staff are always nearby to offer support, the volunteer often manages the visitor center desk alone or in a two-person team. Volunteers who wish to lead formal activities such as public programs may do so.
Most work takes place at the mainland visitor center in Ventura, CA. Volunteers may take occasional trips to island areas to familiarize themselves with the park.
Volunteers are expected to contribute at least one 4.5-hour shift every two weeks for at least one year. Shifts are 8:00-12:30 or 12:30-5:00. Weekly shifts are encouraged, especially for new volunteers, to facilitate building skills and knowledge about the park.
