Bryce Canyon National Park – Resource Stewardship & Science Division

Bryce Canyon National Park is seeking an enthusiastic volunteer to assist the Resource Stewardship and Science team with a variety of physical science fieldwork and data collection projects. This opportunity is ideal for individuals or couples interested in natural resource monitoring, night skies, soundscapes, and hands-on scientific stewardship.

Position Highlights

Volunteers will assist with:

• Night sky and light pollution monitoring – measuring sky brightness and identifying light sources.
• Soundscape monitoring – collecting, deploying, and maintaining acoustic equipment.
• Air quality data collection – supporting sensor checks and basic data recording.
• Temperature monitoring and geohazard identification along designated trails.
• Spring monitoring – recording hydrologic and ecological observations.
• Additional tasks supporting the physical science program.

Documentation & Program Support

• Assist in creating and refining standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Help document workflows and field methods for future staff and volunteers.

Preferred Skills

• Ability to work independently or with a partner; couples are welcome.
• Basic computer literacy, including comfort with data entry and file management.
• Ability to troubleshoot field equipment and resolve minor issues.
• Experience with spreadsheets (Excel or Google Sheets) for data organization.

Who We’re Looking For

• Individuals or pairs motivated by science, stewardship, and fieldwork.
• Local volunteers or volunteers with an RV (RV site may be available).
• Willingness to hike moderate distances and work outdoors in variable weather.
• Able to work at night.
• Detail‑oriented and able to follow established protocols (training provided).

Time Commitment & Dates

• Minimum commitment: 3 months
• Earliest start date: May 5th
• Flexible scheduling based on project needs.
