Position Description Summary:

A VIP (Very Important Person) is a volunteer or docent who is brought on as part of the Great Basin Institute (GBI) Galena Creek Visitor Center team, on temporary or semi-permanent assignment and may commit to 16 hours (more are permitted) or as few as 4 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions

The volunteer will serve the and its visitors through the assistance Galena Creek Visitor Centerof the following duties: *note a VIP can choose to do all or some of duties listed below. 1. Provide interpretive services to members of the local community and visitors; 2. Assist with coordination, preparation and presentation of interpretive programming; 3. Visitor communication and outreach; 4. Guide tours and lead interpretive programs; 5. Perform site maintenance; 6. Assist with conception, drafting, and preparation of field trips and environmental camps; 7. Help to oversee gift shop operations and sales; 8. Help with special events, including participation and set-up/tear-down; 9. Other duties may be assigned, or developed, based on the volunteer’s interests, capacity, and site needs.

Requirements/Qualifications

To be a successful VIP, the volunteer should meet the following requirements listed below. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable volunteers with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

a. Strong working knowledge of Google and MS Office;

b. Excellent active listening, public speaking, and presentation skills; great communicator and comfortable working with diverse populations;

c. Comfortable being in slow and hectic environments

d. Ability to multitask as well as be a self-motivator.

2. Education: While there is no minimum education required to be a volunteer, the volunteer must provide proof of the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.

3. Experience: Applicants will have experience in many or all of the above listed duties and have a high level experience in many or all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities.

4. Background Check: Background checks are only required if a volunteer chooses to lead programming for vulnerable populations.

WORK SCHEDULE

An agreed upon schedule will be configured during an introductory meeting with Gabe Zurn. During this time, if applicant agrees to a VIP position, the following will be established:

● Earliest Start Date

● Specification of hours. For example: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. / 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. / or all day 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. during summer hours).

● Specification of days. During winter hours, we’ll be open Thursday - Sunday. During summer hours, we’ll be open Wednesday - Sunday.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit for several hours, use hands, stand for several hours, walk for 1-2 hours, bend, and have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus working with a computer and other job/industry specific equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.

The overall nature of this position - mostly located indoors, however, occasionally located outdoors - can be sedentary, requiring little physical effort and occasional light exertion, depending on the activities the Volunteer chooses to engage in. There is occasional exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and temperature changes, as well as elevation change and uneven grounds.

NOTE: This position description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Volunteers may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the Center’s ongoing needs.
