Cannon Crew Volunteer

Cannon Crew Volunteers at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park support the National Park Service’s mission by helping visitors connect with the history of the Creek War and the Battle of Horseshoe Bend through historic weapons demonstrations and immersive living‑history experiences. Cannon Crew Volunteers bring to life the sights, sounds, and stories of the 1814 battlefield, helping visitors better understand the significance of the U.S. artillery and Muscogee (Creek) resistance that shaped this pivotal moment in American history.

These volunteers work as a team to operate reproduction War of 1812‑era artillery under the guidance of an NPS‑certified Historic Weapons Supervisor. Cannon Crew Volunteers also provide informal interpretation for visitors throughout Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, answering questions, sharing historical context, and supporting the park’s educational mission. Volunteers must live within the park’s local commuting area (within 50 miles of Horseshoe Bend National Military Park).

Cannon Crew Volunteers must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and must be comfortable working as part of a coordinated team. When interacting with visitors, volunteers practice active listening, communicate clearly, and help ensure safe and meaningful experiences. They strive to understand both NPS policy and Horseshoe Bend National Military Park’s local guidance so they can support visitor safety and resource protection. As respected members of the park team, they share constructive feedback about operations or challenges with park supervisors.

Safety is the highest priority. Volunteers are expected to uphold the safety standards established by the park’s Historic Weapons Program Supervisor at all times.

Duties:

• Volunteer at least one day per month (one 6‑hour shift).
• Wear period‑appropriate War of 1812 uniforms that serve as flame‑resistant personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Work outdoors for extended periods, sometimes in heat, cold, or rain, while wearing historic clothing.
• Successfully complete annual training in historic weapons handling, interpretation, and safety, and pass all required competency evaluations.
• Participate in interpretive programs featuring material culture of the War of 1812 era, including clothing, tools, and weapons.
• Arrive on time for morning drill.
• Enforce safety range boundaries with visitors during artillery demonstrations.
• Assist in cleaning and maintaining weapons after demonstrations.
