Living History Volunteer

Job Description:

Experience 18th Century life while providing interpretive opportunities to those visiting the fort. Provide demonstrations about soldier's, women’s or merchant’s life and answer questions about daily happenings at the fort. Teach people to march or even sew! Have fun while providing service.

Duties:

• Greet park visitors

• Orient and inform park visitors about Fort Stanwix history, events, and programs

• Answer visitor questions

• Wear period-correct 18th Century clothing

• Provide demonstrations for the visiting public about period topics (such as: soldier life, women’s life, trade during the American Revolution, 18th Century Medicine, cleaning, and others!)

Recommended Time Commitment:

Volunteers actively and on regular/scheduled basis. Suggested commitments include: 4-8 hrs per week, 2-4 special event weekends, or combination of the two.

Basic Training Required:

• Orientation to Historic Fort Stanwix/Fort Schuyler w/annual refresher

• Providing Good Customer Service

• Informal Interpretation/Foundations of Interpretation

• Living History Volunteer Orientation to Fort Stanwix National Monument

• Orientation to 1770’s Clothing and Accoutrements for Men, Women, and Children

• Various Artisan Trainings; i.e. 18th Century Sewing and Mending, Medical Practices of the

1770’s, 18th Century Cleaning Practices, etc.

• Many others optional!

Knowledge/Skills Desired:

• Good communication/interpersonal skills

• Reliability

• Comfortable speaking in front of groups of people or willingness to overcome fears/shyness

• Should enjoy American and/or world history or desire to learn more about it

• Willingness to learn about Fort Stanwix National Monument and other historic locales!

• Willingness to be a team player and work with others
