Archeology - Volunteer

Description

We are looking for volunteers who are able and available to come in as

needed by our resources division when shovel testing will occur. The commitment time can change

depending on the needs of the park, but will require a few hours out of their day in order to complete all

the procedures necessary. The volunteer will be informed a week prior to when they will be needed,

alongside the hours that will be required to complete the work

This volunteer position supports Camp Nelson National Monument (CANE) by assisting in the

preservation and documentation of Camp Nelson's physical history, by participating in field data

collection, condition assessments of archaeological zones, and identifying, quantifying, and describing

cultural objects. The volunteer will also assist in data entry, related to cultural resource data into

appropriate forms, including documenting soil depth, color, and texture, and filling out photologs.

Additionally, the volunteer will take photographs and assist in documenting the condition of

fortifications and entrenchment lines, including, but not limited to, the identification and documentation

of possible hazards and disturbances to these historical lands

Duties

Field Data Collection & Surveying: Participate in basic field data collection for condition assessments and surveys. Use standardized protocols to identify, quantify, and describe cultural objects and their current conditions

Archeological Tasks: Conduct shovel tests and screen soil to locate and recover artifacts

Site Documentation: Assist in documenting the condition of fortifications and entrenchment lines, specifically identifying and recording hazards or other land disturbances

Photography: Take photographs of sites and artifacts to maintain accurate photologs to ensure a visual record

Data Entry & Reporting: Assist in entering cultural resource data into appropriate forms, including recording technical soil attributes such as depth, texture etc. Accurately record all field observations and submit the completed data

This position provides volunteers with an opportunity to contribute to the preservation of national parks, expand their knowledge of Camp Nelson, and to learn valuable skills in the field of archeology and data collection by providing shovel tests and soil screening throughout the park grounds for the historic preservation and documentation of the vast and expansive history that Camp Nelson rests on.

Additionally, as of January 1 st , 2007, a volunteer’s time can be counted toward a Volunteer America the Beautiful Pass, which provides free entrance into federal fee areas for one year. Volunteers become eligible for the Volunteer Pass once they have accrued 250 volunteer hours.
