Visitor Services Support volunteers provide customer service and support park operations that contribute to safe, enjoyable, and engaging visitor experiences at the park. Upon selection, park staff and volunteers work together to match volunteer interest, availability, and experience with specific park needs. Time commitments vary based on the individual. Some volunteers work a consistent schedule (e.g. every Friday afternoon) while others work when additional support is needed by the park.

Duties may include:

  • Staffing the visitor center front desk by greeting visitors, presenting the park orientation film, completing credit-card only transactions in the park store, sharing information about park programs and events, directing visitor questions to appropriate park staff when answers are unknown, and answering the park phone.
  • Staffing the entry kiosk to orient visitors arriving to the park.
  • Serving as a museum docent in Aspet, the Saint-Gaudens family home, by providing informal and accurate interpretation while managing the number of visitors within the historic space (no more than twelve individuals may be inside the house at one time), informing visitors of museum rules, monitoring visitor action to protect the cultural resources, and following opening and closing procedures to secure the building.
  • Providing optional support for special events which may include providing information at temporary contact stations; assisting to set-up/take-down tables, tents, chair; safely directing vehicular traffic in parking areas; driving a low-speed electric vehicle to shuttle visitors within the park; and assisting with drop-in park activities such as art projects.

All volunteers must:

  • Foster culture of cooperation, professionalism, respect, and safety as a contributing member of the park team.
  • Develop knowledge and awareness of the park’s enabling legislation, interpretive themes, cultural resources, and related topics through participating in park-organized training and independent study.
  • Learn and follow park safety procedures.
  • Adhere to all rules, guidelines, and laws in place by the park, the National Park Service, and federal government including the Saint-Gaudens NHP Volunteer Policy.
  • Maintain a log of volunteer service hours either manually or digitally.
