Roving Volunteer

Description

Roving Volunteers support the National Park Service mission by helping the public experience Fort Pulaski National Monument’s resources. Roving Volunteers highlight features like Battery Hambright, the North Pier, the John Wesley Monument, the cemetery, and the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. They provide meaningful informal interpretation about Cockspur Island’s cultural and natural history, and occasionally assist park interpretation staff by leading short, guided walking tours.

Roving Volunteers also assist park staff in enforcing park regulations by identifying potential problems and communicating. They follow park safety procedures and report accidents or emergencies to appropriate authorities. Roving Volunteers work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Roving Volunteers are personable, enthusiastic, and patient. They practice active listening and are effective communicators. They bring curiosity and adaptability to their work at FOPU and are constantly looking for information they can use to interpret park resources. They work hard to understand both NPS policy and FOPU local policy. While roving, these volunteers always prioritize safety, both for themselves and for visitors. They are team players who support park staff, and as respected members of the FOPU team, they provide constructive feedback about park operations or problems they are experiencing to supervisors.

Duties

• Volunteer at least one day per month (4-8 hour shift). 
• Practicing safety procedures and use all required equipment, including a radio and a roving kit. 
• Follow check-in procedures before going out, stick to the proposed route, and check out after the day’s rove.
• Use the park Superintendent’s Compendium as a guide to inform visitors about park policies.
• Provide informal interpretation for visitors about the natural and cultural history of Fort Pulaski National Monument.
• If necessary, provide formal interpretation via short, guided walking tours. 
• Aid in emergencies (at the level commensurate with personal training).
• Clean up trails as needed, and make sure visitors are responsible for any trash they generate.
