Blacksmith/Apprentice Volunteer

*These positions are meant for people local to the area surrounding Sleeping Bear Dunes as housing is not included.

Volunteer in Historic Glen Haven

Volunteering as a blacksmith offers a unique opportunity to help bring history to life at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Volunteer blacksmiths demonstrate traditional blacksmithing techniques, create metal objects, and interpret the history of the Glen Haven Blacksmith Shop through live, hands-on demonstrations.

If you have not been a blacksmith at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, you must complete an apprenticeship before working independently. The apprenticeship length varies based on skill level and availability. It may take as little as two months or as long as two summer seasons.

Time commitment:

• At least 1 shift per week (Preferred)
• Shifts are 10:30 am to 5:30 pm
• The season runs from late May through mid-October; volunteers are not required to be available for the entire season.
