Adopt-A-Trail at Buffalo National River

Do you have a favorite trail at Buffalo National River? Help care for the trails you love by joining our Adopt-A-Trail program!

This volunteer opportunity is a fun and meaningful way to enjoy the outdoors while helping keep Buffalo National River’s trail system safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all visitors. Volunteers choose a trail they love (or discover a new favorite!) and assist with light maintenance throughout the year using basic hand tools.

Whether you hike often, enjoy exploring new places, or simply want to give back to the park, this program offers a great opportunity to spend time outside, stay active, and build a stronger connection to Buffalo National River. With more than 100 miles of trails throughout the park, there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference.

By adopting a trail, you also help park staff by providing valuable eyes on areas of the park that may not be routinely maintained. Your observations and stewardship directly support trail safety and help protect these special places for everyone to enjoy.

General Duties:

  • Hiking your designated trail at least 2 times a year
  • Vegetation trimming/pruning
  • Removal of small limbs or debris
  • Scattering of fire pits
  • Removal of trash
  • Cleaning signs/blazes
  • Assessing trail conditions during each visit
  • Submitting a brief trail assessment report after each visit that addresses areas of concern or larger maintenance needs such as:
    • Hazard trees
    • Downed trees
    • Missing or damaged signs
    • Chainsaw work needed
    • Erosion or trail damage

Commitment:

Volunteers are asked to visit their adopted trail at least two times per year, though additional visits are always welcome. You can hike your trail on your own schedule and at your own pace. Buffalo National River can provide basic hand tools if needed, so no prior trail maintenance experience or equipment is required.

Please keep track of volunteer hours for everyone in your group, including travel time to and from the trail. Hours and completed work can be reported through the trail assessment form after each visit. Spend time on the trails you love, discover new places in the park, and help care for America’s first National River! We would love to have you join us on the trails!
