Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (SAPU) is looking for Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP) to support this year's two (2) World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) Day Counts and Events on May 9 and October 10, 2026!

WMBD is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. The theme for WMBD 2026 is "Every Bird Counts - Your Observations Matter!" This year's theme highlights the important role of community science (also referred to as citizen science) for the conservation of migratory birds.

We are looking for passionate VIPs to join us on May 9 and/or October 10, and work alongside our team to provide event information and giveaways to visitors at the event table; assist park rangers with educational programs, including guided hikes; and support the park's annual bird count with their observations!

As a Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP), you will professionally represent the National Park Service by,

  • Following directions from Event Incident Commander (IC) first, then other NPS staff.
  • Staying with your designated Volunteer “Buddy,” if assigned one.
  • Knowing the site and event plan.
  • If able to, assisting with event set-up and event breakdown as directed by IC and NPS staff.
  • Advising visitors about potential hazards, including low visibility, obstacles, and wildlife.
  • Directing visitors to always stay on the trail.
  • Supporting ranger-led activities such as guided hikes with binoculars, bird counts, and other group activities focused on locating, counting, and identifying migratory birds in the park.
  • Supporting park staff with educating visitors about the park, local wildlife, and the importance of habitat protection.
  • Engaging visitors at the event table with WMBD event materials and giveaways.
  • Answering visitor questions about event and locations. If not able to, contact IC and NPS staff.
