Visitor Center Volunteer

Horseshoe Bend National Military Park preserves one of the most pivotal moments in early American history, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on March 27, 1814. Established in 1959, this park honors the rich cultural legacy of the Muscogee (Creek) people and the battle’s lasting impact on both the region and the nation. Today, the National Park Service continues that mission by sharing the story of this critical turning point in the Creek War and its significance within the broader narrative of U.S. history.

As a Visitor Center Volunteer at Horseshoe Bend, you will play an important role in shaping each guest’s experience by offering warm customer service, historical orientation, and meaningful engagement. You’ll work alongside National Park Service staff and dedicated community volunteers to help visitors connect with the past in a welcoming and educational environment.

The current greatest demand for volunteers is for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday shifts.

DUTIES

• Create a welcoming atmosphere by greeting visitors and callers.
• Provide excellent customer service and accurate visitor information.
• Staff the front desk alongside National Park Service staff.
• Answer repetitive questions about park orientation, recreation activities, and the history of the battle itself.
• Provide guidance to the public on rules and regulations.
• Provide guidance to the public on the use of the park driving tour and travelling to the two historic homes on the south side of the lake.
• Maintain familiarity with the history of the battle as well as interpretive programming being offered by National Park Service staff.
• Become acquainted with National Park Service staff and programs.
• Keep work area and Visitor Center tidy and presentable to the public.
• Providing Interpretive programming based on personal interest and research at the site.
• Other duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

• Preferred previous experience in customer service and/or visitor information.
• Comfortably stand/sit in one location for long periods of time.
• Commit to at least one (4-hour) shift per week.
• Read, understand, and interpret park maps and other printed materials and accurately communication information to visitors.
• Communicate effectively with park staff and work as a member of a team.
• Arrive ON TIME at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the Volunteer Coordinator.
• Wear an official volunteer uniform (provided) for the duration of volunteer duties.
• Behave in professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.
