Interpretive Park Guide

Grant-Kohrs Ranch is an 1860’s cattle ranch. It is the only NPS site established to tell the story of the frontier cattle era in American history. It is still an operating ranch today with about 100 head of cattle. The park is located in Deer Lodge, Montana. A small city with about 3,000 people located in southwestern Montana. Complete services are available in Deer Lodge, including grocery stores, gas stations, schools, dental and medical facilities, and a hospital. The climate is very dry with moderate summers (rarely exceeding 90 degrees) and cold winters.

We are looking for volunteers, who are willing to commit 24 hours a week as a couple or 32 hours a week for individuals, to work alongside interpretive rangers; sharing information with visitors and leaving them with a greater understanding and appreciation of the open range cattle era.

Duties will include working with park visitors, staffing a visitor center desk, orienting visitors to the site and the surrounding area. Researching, developing and presenting formal thematic interpretive programs relating to the frontier cattle era which include a 20-minute tour of the main ranch house, chuckwagon talks, hands-on ranger choice programs (ex. Branding, grasses, habitats, a year at the ranch, etc.) and others.

Interpretive training will be provided. There is no park housing or RV pads on site at Grant-Kohrs Ranch. The park will reimburse up to $750 for your stay at a local RV park. Also, the park will provide uniform shirts and historic dress clothing if you decide to do some living history programs.
