Park Education Internship

Main Goals for Position:

This position will facilitate and prepare programing to assist in providing a fun and educational experience for visitors, youth groups, and students; helping them understand the significance of the resources of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace. The position can be held in collaboration with universities to provide course credit for students, or count towards required internships.  

Description: 

Are you in school with a focus on becoming a teacher or going into education? This volunteer position will give you the chance to learn valuable skills within your chosen field!

The Education Program Intern will work with student groups, educators, and park rangers at the Birthplace and Knob Creek Visitor Centers, Memorial Building, and other locations within the park as well as the local community. Spring, summer, fall, and winter openings available!

The Intern will assist the park Education Technician with content creation, lesson plans, planning special events, and other content and materials. They may also perform interpretation frontline duties such as staffing the information desk, and guiding family programs. 

Position Duties:  

• Following the schedule to provide kids/youth activity at trail/park 
• Keeping the group engaged and building curiosity 
• Assist Education staff with prepping content and materials for programs as well as for on-site and off-site events.   
• Help with special events, such as summer camps or special kid’s days.  
• Lead field trips. Field trips for all ages occur throughout the year.  
• Lead family style tours for youth focused groups, such as homeschool/family tours at the Memorial Building or nature walks on the trails. 
• As needed, greet park visitors and provide information about park through orientation, directions, crowd control, and other related duties as assigned.

• Indoor and Outdoor Options: Depending on the volunteer's role, they may work in designated indoor spaces or outdoors, aligning with their interests and activities. 
• Community Interaction: The position involves engaging with visitors, leading workshops, or participating in educational programs, which helps build a sense of community and collaboration. 

Climate: 

• Seasonal Variations: The climate in Kentucky features four distinct seasons. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters are mild but can bring cold temperatures and occasional snow. 
• Rainfall: The region experiences moderate rainfall, particularly in spring and early summer, which may affect outdoor activities and planning. 
• Weather Preparedness: Volunteers should be prepared for changing weather conditions, with appropriate gear for both hot and cold weather. 

Physical Demands: 

• Mobility: Volunteers may need to walk or hike to different locations within the park, which can involve uneven terrain. 
• Manual Labor: Depending on their role, volunteers may encounter physical demands such as lifting materials, setting up materials, or carrying equipment. 
• Endurance: Working outdoors for extended periods can require stamina, especially during warmer months or while participating in community events. 
• Adaptability: Volunteers must be flexible in adapting to both environmental and community dynamics, responding to visitors and weather changes as they carry out their activities.
