Campground Host

Program Overview: Visitors from all over the world travel to Big Cypress National Preserve to see if they can catch a glimpse of an endangered Florida Panther, spot a flock of roseate spoonbills, and watch alligators in the wild. They walk along our boardwalks, viewing animals unlike anything they've seen before, and immerse themselves in the wonder of cypress domes. They come to canoe the water ways, hike in the back country, take an off-road vehicle ride, seek stunning vistas, and stop at the visitor centers to learn more about the swamp, pinelands, prairies, and cypress domes, history, and the many uses of the Preserve’s 729,000 acres. 

Campground hosts represent the National Park Service and are a valuable asset to the park’s campground operation. Hosts deal with a variety of people and personalities. Major duties and requirements of this position are listed below. Hosts are not required to take on law enforcement issues; however, they do serve as very important eyes and ears in the campgrounds and aid in reporting any problems or situations to park rangers. Most of all, Big Cypress hosts ensure that park visitors have as safe and enjoyable a visit as possible.  As emissaries of the NPS, hosts can make the difference between an adequate and an excellent camping experience.

Hosts will be issued uniform shirts, a jacket, and a hat but must supply their own khaki or dark brown pants, socks, and closed-toed shoes.

Major Duties:

Ø Provide information to visitors in the campground.

Ø Complete light maintenance in order to assist the assigned Campground Maintenance Volunteers.

Ø Perform attendant duties associated with the recreation.gov reservation system, such as placing/removing tags, and assisting visitors with their reservations. Selectees may be asked to use their personal smart phones to complete this.

Ø Maintain consistent communication with volunteer supervisor. Reports vandalism and safety hazards, as well as repairs needed to facilities.

If selected, volunteers applying for this position will be stationed at Bear Island Campground which is roughly 45 minutes from the nearest town and grocery store. It is beautiful and small campground that has character and attracts campers from all across the country. Campground Hosts will not be at the campground alone, they will be with at least one other volunteer maintenance couple.

Volunteers that can commit to the whole season (November-April) will be given priority over other applicants.
