Maintenance Assistant

Purpose of Job:                     Volunteer will assist with the maintenance of assets, associated with the Johnson City and LBJ Ranch site, leaving them unimpaired for future generations to enjoy. As a result, volunteer will provide visitors an opportunity to have a safe, enjoyable, and educational park experience. 

Job Duties:                            Volunteer will be an integral member of the park’s Maintenance team. The main function of this position is to provide assistance and supplement skill functions within the maintenance divisions daily and special projects tasks. Volunteer tasks associated are as listed, but not inclusive:

·        Grounds maintenance

·        Roads and trails maintenance

·        Trash pickup

·        Structural maintenance

·        Custodial (vacuuming, replacing soap, paper towels, and toilet paper, empty trash and recycling, sweep, mop and wax floors, wash windows and etc.)

·        Minor electrical repairs

·        Minor plumbing repairs

·        Maintenance administrative duties

Qualifications: Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is looking for volunteer with the following skills:

·        Skilled in the safe and expedient operation of hand tools and hand-held power tools (hammers, shovels, hoes, levels, squares, carpenter level, plum and chalk lines, vacuum, floor scrubbers and polishers, cordless drill, etc.)

·        Must be able to maneuver motorized equipment in open areas, confined spaces, on even ground, in traffic and other congested areas involving pedestrians and vehicles efficiently and safely.

·        All volunteers may be able to safely operate, control and motorized equipment only after completing all operating and safety training courses.

·        Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.  

·        Valid driver’s license.

·        Be able to follow National Park Service environmental & historic preservation rules

·        Works well both as a team and independently

Physical Demands: Volunteer must be mentally aware of surrounding conditions while physically doing work. Exertion of heavy physical effort may be required in such tasks as lifting and carrying objects weighing over 40 pounds (i.e. hay bales). There may be periods when the volunteer may be required to exert considerable physical effort; stooping, lifting, standing, bending, kneeling, and stretching. Work may require frequent arm and leg movement to operate various types of equipment.

Working Conditions: Volunteer may work outside/inside for long periods and be subject to unpleasant odors, dust, and high humidity. Temperatures and humidity can be high. Volunteer may be subject to grease, dirt, dust, soiling of clothing and skin surfaces, noise vibrations, fumes, and working in water. Volunteer may be subject to discomfort from wearing personal protective equipment for long periods.

Work Schedule: Local/Part-Time: Volunteer should expect to work a minimum of 8 hours per week. This can be split into one full day of 8 hours, or two half-days of 4 hours each in a week. Volunteers may also be required to attend periodic meetings and training sessions. Volunteer will work a predetermined schedule. Volunteer and supervisor will determine days expected on site at least two weeks in advance. Volunteer would need to call Supervisor or Volunteer Coordinator should illness or other unexpected happening cause a change to the work schedule.

Seasonal/VIP Housing: Volunteer is required to work a minimum of 32 hours per week for at least three months.

Benefits to volunteers: Volunteers will be able to share the history of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Texas Hill Country, and President Johnson and family with visitors from all over the world, while receiving insight and knowledge into National Park Service operations and opportunities to participate in National Park Service training. In addition, volunteers will be contributing to the efforts of maintaining the buildings, roads and trails, and the landscaped areas within the National Park Service Site and will work with a professional staff committed to excellence. Seasonal volunteers will have the opportunity to live in a national park (upon availability)!

Training: The volunteer supervisor will provide an orientation to the park, its mission, and its staff. The volunteer will receive on-the-job training in park operations and workplace safety. The park will provide all necessary PPE (personal protective equipment) and associated tools and equipment to complete the required work. Use of personal equipment will not be allowed. Volunteers are expected to use the safety gear provided by the NPS. Individuals that do not use the assigned safety gear will not be allowed to participate in the assigned project.  A volunteer uniform may be provided. The volunteer will be trained on Lyndon B. Johnson NHP’s safety guidelines and regulations. Volunteers must follow the procedures listed in the Maintenance Assistant’s Job Safety Analysis.
