Luminaria de Abo Event Volunteer @ SAPU 2026

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (SAPU) is bringing back its stunning annual Luminaria de Abo event on Saturday, December 5, 2026!

Salinas Pueblo Missions is an innovative and fast-paced park looking for passionate VIPs to join our Luminaria de Abo by assisting with event prep and break down, staging of over 1,000 luminarias, and visitor engagement to ensure event safety.

As a Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP), you will professionally represent the National Park Service by,

• Following directions from Event Incident Commander (IC) first, then other NPS staff. 
• Staying with your designated Volunteer “Buddy,” if assigned.
• Knowing the site and Event Plan.
• Informing visitors and staff about potential hazards, including low visibility, obstacles, and wildlife. 
• Helping educate and engage visitors by providing a friendly, interactive environment for visitors aimed towards increasing understanding, and support of, the mission, history and resources of Salinas Pueblo Missions. 
• Answering visitor questions about the event, including sharing locations of facilities, restrooms, refreshments, and first-aid stations. If not able to, refer to IC and NPS staff. 
• If able to, safely assisting with event set up and breakdown. Set up can include staging of luminarias weeks ahead of the event. Breakdown can include removal of luminarias the day after the event.
• Supporting placement and removal of over 1,000 luminarias along the trails, convento and mission walls using safe operating procedures under the guidance of NPS staff or volunteer lead.
• Safely assisting with directing vehicle traffic to designated parking areas within the Abo Unit and the Town of Mountainair, if assigned.
• Roving during the event asking visitors to always remain on the trail. If assigned to specific location, ensure that visitors follow park and event rules.
• Assisting visitors onto and off bus shuttles safely. Directing visitors to shuttle loading and unloading locations.
