RV Hosts at Lava Lands Visitor Center/Lava River Cave

Location: Lava Lands Visitor Center, Deschutes National Forest, Sunriver/Bend, OR

***We provide RV pad with full hookups, but you must provide trailer or motorhome***

The U.S. Forest Service seeks a couple or individual to assist with visitor services at Newberry National Volcanic Monument’s Lava Lands Visitor Center & Lava River Cave. Lava Lands Visitor Center is the information hub of Newberry National Volcanic Monument within the Deschutes National Forest. It is located 8 miles South of Bend, OR. Lava River Cave, a popular show cave, is just 1.5 miles down the road. Visitors can explore many volcanic features on the Monument and also enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating, fishing and camping.

Job Duties: The primary duties of the uniformed host position include, but are not limited to:

• Welcoming and orienting Monument visitors
• Providing in-depth information on Monument sites
• Lava River Cave reservation check-in using a tablet
• Occasional cave sweeps at the end of the day (2+ miles)
• Hosts need to provide their own transportation to and from Lava River Cave
• Collaborating with non-profit partner staff at Lava River Cave—managing flashlight rentals
• Willingness to assist with light maintenance
• Staffing a welcome station (fee booth) and occasionally selling merchandise
• Moderate fitness level and ability to hike up to 3 miles is desired

SCHEDULE

Volunteers are asked to work 8-hour shifts, 4 days per week. Most scheduled hours will be during daylight hours, typically between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong visitor service skills and enthusiasm for serving the public
• Effective communication with diverse audiences
• A friendly and helpful attitude
• Patience with repetitive questions and tasks
• Interest in learning about the volcanic and cultural history of the area
• Must be able to perform required duties with minimal supervision after training
• Moderate fitness level and ability to hike up to 3 miles is desired
• Cash handling and record keeping experience is helpful

If accepted, you will be assigned a Forest Service lead who will check you in and out of your quarters, check out a uniform, create your schedule, and be your day to day supervisor for the season.
