Visitor Center Services

Purpose of Job:                     Volunteers will assist park visitors at the Johnson City Visitor Center by providing accurate information on park resources, directions, special events, and park safety, in order for visitors to have a safe, enjoyable, and educational park experience. 

Job Duties:                            Volunteers are an integral member of the park’s Interpretation team by assisting in offering excellent customer service and learning opportunities for park visitors. Volunteers will:

·        Meet and greet visitors

·        Answer visitor questions related to park resources, history, and legacy of Lyndon B. Johnson, Texas Hill Country, and other related topics

·        Use brochures/maps/handouts to answer involved questions about resources in or near the park. Restock park literature when needed.

·        Explain the Junior Ranger program and provide workbooks. Lead Junior Ranger badge ceremony.

·        Assist in opening and closing the visitor center

Qualifications:                       Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is looking for volunteers with the following skills:

·        Be friendly, outgoing, and patient

·        Have a welcoming and professional demeanor

·        Be able and willing to learn about the history of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, President Johnson, “Lady Bird” Johnson, and the president’s family

·        Be able to follow National Park Service environmental and historic preservation rules

·        Enjoys working with the public

·        Excellent customer service

·        Comfortable working with small and large groups

·        Works well both as a team and independently

·        Has an interest in history, education, and the environment

Physical Demands:                Physical demands may include sitting at a desk, standing, bending, reaching, walking and lifting.

Working Conditions:           Visitor Center work is indoors but may occasionally be performed outdoors. Summer temperatures can reach into the 100s, though the average summer temperature is 92 degrees. The winter temperatures range from mid-twenties to thirties (with occasional freezes) in the night to fifties and sixties in the day.

Work Schedule:                    Volunteers should expect to work a minimum of 8 hours per week. This can be split into one full day of 8 hours, or two half-days of 4 hours each in a week. If the volunteer is staying in park housing or has a park RV pad, they are required to work a minimum of 32 hours per week for at least two months. Volunteers may also be required to attend periodic meetings and training sessions. Volunteers will work a predetermined schedule, determined with the supervisor at least two weeks in advance. If illness or other unexpected event causes a change to the work schedule, the volunteer must call/notify their Supervisor or Volunteer Coordinator.

Benefits to volunteers:         Volunteers will be able to share the history of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Texas Hill Country, and President Johnson and family with visitors from all over the world, while receiving insight and knowledge into National Park Service operations and opportunities to participate in National Park Service training. Volunteers will also gain experience in customer service and historic preservation. Seasonal volunteers will have the opportunity to live in a national park (upon availability)!

Training:                                The Volunteer Manager and/or Supervisor will provide volunteer orientation and training. The volunteer will be trained on Lyndon B. Johnson NHP’s safety guidelines and regulations. Volunteers must follow the procedures listed in the Visitor Center Information Services’ Job Safety Analysis.
