Lend a Hand, Leave a Legacy

Want to get outside, make a difference, and be part of a growing trail stewardship community? Join First State National Historical Park as a Trail Steward and help care for the 27 miles of trails and roads that wind through the Brandywine Valley.

Whether you have an hour or a few days each season, your time helps keep our trails clear, safe, and sustainable for all visitors. Volunteers may join on a drop-in basis or sign up for pre-scheduled service days.

Volunteer Duties

• Support trail and road maintenance: brushing, clearing, gravel work, light drainage work, etc.
• Remove small litter and debris from park paths.
• Operate hand tools safely (and power tools, with training).
• Work as part of a team under the guidance of a Trail Steward Lead.
• Communicate concerns or hazards to supervisors.
• Follow all park safety and environmental guidelines.

Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Able to hike 3+ miles over uneven terrain and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and near bike traffic.
• Bring your own closed- or steel-toed footwear, long pants, and appropriate outerwear.

Provided by the Park

• PPE and tools (you may use your own if they meet standards).
• Training and supervision.
• Uniform shirt and hat for regular volunteers (drop-ins receive name tags).
