Petrified Forest National Park loves volunteers! The park is seeking dynamic, and enthusiastic volunteers to help with visitor services. Petrified Forest protects over 221,000 acres that contain millions of years of geologic time, fossils, archaeological areas, spectacular scenery, Rt 66 and of course an abundance of petrified wood. Each year Petrified Forest is visited by half a million visitors. Volunteers play an important role in helping these visitors plan their visit to the park by providing park information over the phone, in person at a visitor center and on trails throughout the park.

Housing or an on-site RV pad with hook-ups (water, sewer, electric) may be available, Volunteers in need of housing work up to 30 hours consisting of three 8-hour days and one 6-hour day. Couples work a minimum of 24 hours per week per person (three 8 hours days). Couples wishing to apply should complete an application for each person. A minimum of 3 months is preferred for new volunteers. The park does not have a dedicated volunteer coordinator so please be patient and respectful regarding correspondence. Flexibility, kindness and understanding are essential!

Area Information

RV/trailer sites are located on the North end of the park in the visitor center complex. Petrified Forest is in a remote location off of I-40 with the nearest grocery stores located in Gallup NM (75 miles) and Holbrook, AZ (21 miles). Medical care facilities are located in Show Low, AZ (90 miles) and Flagstaff, AZ (132 miles).
