Surry Mountain Lake - Park Host (Summer 2027)

The government will supply a site for a mobile camper/RV with electric power, water, and sewage hookups on site if the volunteer meets the minimum 25 hours of work per week requirement.

The primary duties of the Park Host/Maintenance Volunteer are to assist Park Rangers at Otter Brook and Surry Mountain Lakes in the operation and maintenance of recreation areas and in the stewardship of natural and cultural resources. Volunteer duties include but are not limited to: Staffing the entrance booth, greeting, and assisting park visitors, opening/closing recreation areas, light restroom cleaning, upkeep of displays and signs, trash pick-up, general landscaping activities (weeding, raking, mulching, weed whacking, leaf blowing, etc.) removing invasive and unwanted species, brush clearing and pruning. Volunteers will not collect fees. Volunteers will not enforce park rules or Title 36. The government will supply a site for a mobile camper/RV with electric power, water and sewage hookups on site. Volunteer must be available to volunteer a minimum of 25 hours a week to qualify for site.

Requirements:

o  Be 18 years of age or older

o  Possess a valid driver’s license

o  Be able to complete tasks independently as well as part of a team.

o  Be physically capable to accomplish tasks and assignments set forth in this position description and the volunteer agreement. The volunteer may be required lift up to 40lbs. and operate tools such as a weed whacker, UTV, pruners, pole saw, or other tools. Safety training will be conducted by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to use of equipment.

o  Be willing to work in all weather conditions

o  Volunteers may be subject to background security checks by USACE. If a background check is required, the volunteer shall:

§ Complete the form entitled “Disclosure & Authorization Form for Criminal and Sex Offense Background Check”. 

§  Be fingerprinted at a USACE District office. The New England district office is located in Concord, MA.

o  Volunteer agreement is contingent upon successful completion and submission of the form and finger printing process.

Professionalism/Code of Conduct:

Volunteers are a representative of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers while on duty. Volunteers will promote and maintain a favorable image of the USACE through their actions and personal appearance. Behaviors, language, personal appearance shall be professional in nature.

Volunteers:

o  Will maintain a fully clothed, neat, well-groomed appearance. Appropriate footwear will be worn at all times. Open-toe footwear will not be permitted while on duty.

o  Will refrain from fighting or using abusive language with the public, other employees, volunteers, contractors, or their supervisor. Volunteers must be able to interact with other people regardless of race, religion, culture, or gender, and promote a work environment free of any type of harassment or discrimination.

o  Will be responsible for maintenance of the camp site, and adjacent areas in a clean and sanitary condition. Otter Brook Lake and Surry Mountain Lake are day use areas only. All visitors and family of the volunteers will be limited to the volunteer’s self-contained camper unit.

Schedule: Volunteers are asked to remain flexible in their assigned hours. Volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 25 hours a week if campsite is provided.

o  Volunteers’ schedules will include both weekdays and weekend days. Volunteers will be given a minimum of 2 consecutive days off a week.

o  Schedules should be set up bi-weekly between the volunteer and Volunteer Coordinator.

o  If you cannot come in on your scheduled day, volunteers are to contact the volunteer coordinator or Project Manager preferably with 25 hours’ notice.

o  Volunteers may be asked to make up assigned days in order to complete projects that are time sensitive.   

o  The volunteer is expected to record their volunteer hours each day they work on the form provided to them by the Volunteer Coordinator.
