Non-Motorized Trails- Maintenance and Construction


Dates: Volunteer days are to be scheduled with the Recreation Program Manager. Typically, Monday- Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

Safety Gear: Wall Ranger District can provide gloves, hardhats, safety glasses and tools.

Volunteers should bring: water, lunch, sunscreen and wear long sleeves and pants. This position also includes the optional use of personal bicycles- and all the required personal protective equipment (PPE) to operate bicycles by Forest Service Standards.

Camping: Camping is available at our first-come, first-served Pinnacles Dispersed Camping Area. We CANNOT guarantee a reserved site.

Age: 16+ years old preferred; minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Please discuss with the Site Contact if you plan on bringing a minor with (16–17-year-olds); they do NOT sign up through the site. We will provide the Parent/Guardian with the paperwork to onboard them as a volunteer.


Proposed Project:

Maintenance of existing non-motorized hiking, biking, and horse trails on the Wall Ranger District, and Fall River Ranger District of the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands.


This includes repairing and replacing trail markers and guidance posts, mowing and brushing trails to standard, use of trail tools to install re-routes, new trail construction, and drainage structures as needed.


Other duties may include scouting for new trail locations, GPS mapping of existing trails or new trail alignments. Training and trail education opportunities will be provided by U.S. Forest Service.


Communicating with Recreation Staff on dates, times, and location is essential to this volunteer opportunity!
