Historic Crafts Demonstrator - Peaks of Otter- Blue Ridge Parkway

The National Park Service is seeking Historic Craft Demonstrator Volunteers to serve the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center area located at milepost 86 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The volunteers will perform 19th and 20th century historic crafts, trades, and skills demonstrations (i.e. fiber arts, basket making, weaving, cornhusk dolls, etc.) outside the visitor center, at Johnson Farm, and/or at Polly Wood’s Ordinary.

The Peaks of Otter consists of three mountain peaks (Sharp Top, Flat Top and Harkening Hill) surrounding the picturesque Abbott Lake. A popular hiking destination, the Peaks of Otter also boasts an impressive history of early mountain tourism. The Historic Johnson Farm is an interpretive site at the Peaks of Otter. John Therone and Mary Elizabeth Johnson bought land on Harkening Hill in 1852 and established a farm that would remain in their family for three generations. Polly Wood’s Ordinary was the first public accommodation in the area opening in the 1830s.

Major Duties

·      Greet and interact with visitors, answering often repetitive questions.

·      Give interpretive demonstrations and educate visitors about the history and culture of the Appalachians.

·      Answer visitor questions and give informal interpretive talks while working.

·      Direct traffic in parking areas or during special events as needed.

·      Educate Parkway visitors about the National Park Service Mission including how and why to protect Parkway resources.

·      Attend volunteer briefings and training sessions.

·      Communicate with NPS staff about needs, issues, successes, and hazards related to volunteer activities.

·      Ensure and provide for a safe environment for themselves, others, and Parkway resources at all times.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·      Basic knowledge of crafting is preferred but not required

·      Ability to walk on uneven terrain

·      Ability to work outside in various weather conditions

·      Ability to lift loads of up to 20 pounds

·      Ability to interact with the public in a polite and professional manner

Time Commitment

Volunteer is expected to serve at least 5 hours per week, but the time commitment is flexible and can be modified after discussion with the National Park Service Volunteer Supervisor.
