National Public Lands Day BioBlitz Plant Survey

This volunteer position is part of the volunteer event that Golden Spike National Historical Park is hosting for National Public Lands Day. Volunteers in this position will work with park staff in the field, in off trail areas surveying plants. They will receive a 30-minute training on safe off-trail practices and identification of local plants, before going out to the field to identify and record the distribution of native and invasive plants.

Preferred Qualifications

Volunteers for this position will ideally

• be available for 4 hours in the morning of Public Lands Day, September 26, 2026
• be interested in plant identification
• be prepared to work for 3-4 hours outdoors, off trail, in a potentially harsh environment
• be ready to follow all safety guidelines including wearing long pants, long sleeves, close toed shoes, hats, sunscreen and bug spray.

Our Park

Golden Spike National Historical Park commemorates one of the most transformative events in America's history, the completion of the nation's first Transcontinental Railroad. Its location at Promontory Summit features the place where the last spike was driven along with a nation-wide celebration on May 10, 1869. At nearly 5000 feet elevation, Golden Spike is located within a summit valley of the Promontory Mountains which form a mountain peninsula that juts out into the Great Salt Lake. The arid landscape is a sagebrush steppe, featuring grassland covered mountains punctuated with sagebrush and juniper habitat.
